New album - The Mutiny - coming soon!
Cambridge- and London-based 7-piece Sunday Driver are well known for their experimentation with new sounds, fusing the best of British acoustic music with traditional Indian rhythms and melodies. Their unique line up comprises clarinet, tabla, drums, sitar, concert harp, guitar, vocals, and a pair of old dessert spoons.
Funded by Arts Council England, The Mutiny is just one part of the Sunday Driver phenomenon. This is a band that you simply must see playing live. Their characterful shows feature Victorian and Raj costumery, outbreaks of Bollywood dancing and even homemade cakes.
Inspired by the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and current events, the album is a dark and witty exploration of revolution, anarchy and society on the brink of change. Taking their creativity and song writing to new heights, the album is a musical mutiny itself – refusing to be categorised into any one genre.
As the band head into the last quarter of 2011, they have enjoyed the most successful year of their career so far, thanks in part to a burgeoning international fanbase. Recent tours to the US and Germany, and numerous shows across the UK – such as gigs supporting the Levellers and rising Bangalore star Raghu Dixit on his debut UK tour – are testament to the growing popularity of this Cambridge-grown band.
The band’s first album, In The City Of Dreadful Night, received airplay from6 Music, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, BBC 3 Counties to name a few - expect to hear even more of The Mutiny! The first single from the album will be reaching radio and press over the next few months, and the official release of the album is planned for Spring 2012.
Previous performance highlights include: Norwich Arts Centre (supporting Raghu Dixit) Cambridge Folk Festival, The World Steam Expo (Michigan, US), Galtres Festival (York, supporting the Levellers), Café de Paris (London), Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), The Asylum , Inselsommer (Mannheim, Germany), Solfest (Carlisle), Sunrise Festival (Somerset), The Secret Garden Party (Cambridgeshire), Edinburgh Mela, Cambridge Big Day Out, and Crawley Mela.
