Dragon Con Sights and Sounds: Steampunk Media Edition! Created by ApprenticeLiesel on 8/26/2013 10:55:25 PM
Media Editor Liesel Hindmann talks about what to see media-wise at Dragon Con 2013!
That wonderful time of the year is upon us, ladies and gentlemen. Dragon Con is in a few days and we here at Steampunk Chronicle are rushing to finish everything up before the big weekend. Of course, our readers probably are too. And with the schedule out for the entire con, it makes it even more hectic to choose where to go and what to see.
But if you're curious as to what to see in regards to steampunk media that's exciting and maybe a little off the beaten path, perhaps we can help! Here are some things to keep an eye out for at Dragon Con this year!
Bored of chap hop and airship pirates? Want a little more variety in your steam powered music? Well, there's plenty of acts to satisfy at Dragon Con this year!
Thursday night, Curtis Eller's American Circus and Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands go back to back in the Marriott Atrium Ballroom. Both acts have been featured in Steampunk Chronicle in the past and they both put on a hell of a live show! Your steam-powered weekend will be starting off right with this bill! Eller starts at 9 and Bright goes on at 10:30. If you'll be missing them though, not to fret because there are plenty of concourse opportunities to see them! Eller will be on the Hyatt Concourse stage Friday at 4 p.m, Sunday at 6:30 p.m, and Monday at 1 p.m. Bright and her Silver Hands will be on at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 p.m. on Sunday.
If you like yourself a rollicking good party, then you might want to stay up till midnight on Friday for Atlanta's own Blair Crimmins and the Hookers! If you're not feeling awake by then, you certainly will be by the end of the show. Crimmins' classic ragtime jazz and swing plus his rambunctious energy will get you going better than any caffeine jolt! He'll be in the Atrium Ballroom as well.
Going a little more subdued at this con? No problem. This year, Unwoman has finally made it out to the big con! She's all over the concourse with performances at 9 p.m. on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Of course, there is one other place where you can see some of these performers, but more on that later. Let's go onto…
I'll admit, there are a lot of good panels in the Alternate History track this year, let alone media ones. So much so that I'm rather sad I wasn't asked to be on any of them. But that just gives me more time to enjoy them! Here are some of the media panels that will be going on this year.
-"Steampunk Themes in Doctor Who" - Friday/8:30 p.m./Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - What it says on the tin. Doctor Q, John Strangeway, and Lance Buckley will be talking about the more Steampunk aspects of Doctor Who.
-"Meet the League of S.T.E.A.M." - Saturday/4 p.m./Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - Want to know more about your favorite steampunk paranormal investigators? The League of S.T.E.A.M. will be discussing their hijinks and much more!
-"Time After Time Reunion" - Saturday/4 p.m./Westin Atlanta Ballroom - Fans of the 1979 film Time After Time will be happy to know that Malcolm McDowell and David Warner will be reuniting to discuss the film 34 years later!
-"Automatons and Octopi: The Work of Doktor A and Brian Kesinger" - Sunday/11:30 a.m/Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - Doktor A and Brian Kesinger talk about their art and influences.
-"Vintage Tomorrows Screening" - Sunday/4 p.m./Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - The creators of the steampunk documentary Vintage Tomorrows screen their movie and answer questions.
-"State of Steampunk Literature" - Monday/10 a.m./Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - Various writers and publishing representatives will be discussing steampunk literature in this early morning round table.
-"Alternate History Retrospective: A Podcast Mega-show Finale" - Monday/1 p.m./Westin Augusta 1 and 2 - The S.T.E.A.M. Geeks and the Ratchet RetroCast get together to bring the Alternate History track to a close!
Of course, what's a good Dragon Con without…
There are two main parties on the Alternate History track this year. The first is the Aether Lounge on Thursday in the Westin Atlanta Ballroom at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be a casual party with DJs, mingling, and an open bar to start your con. Swing by before making it to the Thursday night performances!
The big party for the Alternate History track is on Sunday though. The Mechanical Masquerade: The Retropolis is bound to bring Sunday night out with a bang in its usual extremely stylish and massively fun way! Emceed by Professor Elemental, the evening long party will feature performances by Blair Crimmins and the Hookers and Unwoman as well as vaudeville acts from The League of S.T.E.A.M. and DJ sets from Doctor Q and the ladies of The Clockwork Cabaret! And it all starts at 8:30 p.m. in the Peachtree Ballroom of the Westin! Though, I hear rumor that if you show up early to wait in line, extra entertainment in the form of Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands will be provided.
That's it for my round up! I hope there's something to your liking in my tastes. Of course, if you want to know more, be sure to check the complete Alternate History track schedule.
See you at the con!
